Computers and technology now allows for faster processing of data, easier retrieval of information, and in some cases, automation of tasks that increases productivity of employees. When people perform tasks by hand, it can be time consuming and full of human errors. When technology is used for repetitive operations, mistakes are reduced or eliminated, and the time it takes to complete the task is greatly reduced.

Consider how credit cards are accepted as payment today compared to the past: once upon a time, employees had to take a physical impression of the credit card with a little hand tool that pressed the card against carbon paper and transferred the image onto a piece of paper. Today, credit cards are merely swiped through a small card reader and payment is made. Orders are processed much faster, making it possible for employees to service more customers in the same amount of time.

Automate tasks save time for employees

Are there tasks that you do over and over again in your office or business that you could automate with technology? For example, internet businesses often generate newsletters to people interested in their products or services. Surely, it doesn’t make sense to write a new e-mail to welcome each person as they subscribe to your mailing list. Instead, you would write your welcome e-mail and use a newsletter service to automatically send the letter when there is a new subscriber.

Improve communication

Many businesses today use various communication technologies to change the way their employees interact and communicate while at work. Employees can use various communication tools to interact or exchange information at work. For example, employees from different departments in a company can use text messaging services or video conferencing tools like Skype to share and exchange information. Virtual communication tools can be used to share screens and this can help workers to share projects while in different departments, the same application can be used to support group decision making. Also communication technologies can be used in the customer service department to serve customers on time.

Improves human resources management

Technology can change the way human resource managers do their job. It improves on the process of screening, recruiting and hiring new employees. Many human resource managers are using internet to advertise job openings. Targeted candidates will be in position to apply for these positions online by submitting their resumes to the human resource manager. All this saves time and it makes the human resource managers work easier. Technology can also be used to track performance and productivity of each employee at work. Once employees are aware that they are being monitored, their productivity will increase.
