Facebook recently announced that it will start sharing app and web browsing history it collects to advertisers in order to display more targeted ads. Basically, Facebook will be using your browsing history; including non-Facebook sites you visit, to benefit advertisers. This announcement was made under the guise of making ads better by giving you more control over which ads you will see. If you are not too keen on this, you can opt out of this new feature.

According to Facebook, you can keep your apps and web browsing history away from prying third-party eyes. All you need to do is go to the Digital Advertising Alliance to let them know that you are not willing to share your browsing history. You can also use the controls provided in your iOS and Android mobile devices to opt out of this feature.

Stop Facebook from Targeting Ads Using Your App and Browsing History

Go to the Digital Advertising Alliance website. Wait for the Testing Browser Support for Cookies to finish checking your browser.

NOTE: Make sure your browser is set to accept cookies and turn off any ad blocking extension you are running so you can use this website.

Once the testing is done, look for Facebook Inc. under Companies Customizing Ads For Your Browser, and then check the box next to it.

You can check any of the other choices listed if you want to. When you’re done, click the Submit your choices button, and then wait for the Opt Out Complete confirmation.

Stop Facebook from Targeting Ads Using Your App and Browsing History on Your iOS and Android Devices

The instruction for stopping Facebook from using your app and web browsing history is different when you are using an iOS or an Android device.

If you are using an iOS device, you will need to enable Restrictions. To do this, go to Settings > General > Restrictions.

Tap Enable Restrictions, and then enter a 4-digit Restrictions Passcode.

Re-enter the Restrictions Passcode, and then scroll down and look for Advertising.

Tap Advertising, and make sure Limit Ad Tracking is ON.

If you are using an Android device, go to Settings > Account > Google > Ads, and then check Opt out of interest-based ads.
