Almost every Microsoft user knows that in order to purchase anything from the Windows Store, you need to have a Microsoft account with a linked credit card (or debit card, or PayPal). The following are some simple ways on how to keep your account safe and properly track the purchases that you make.

Require a Password for Purchases

By default, the Windows Store is set up to require a password any time you make a purchase (an actual transaction; you will not be asked for a password if you download a free app or a free trial). You can turn this feature off, however, doing it is not really recommended.

To turn this feature off or turn it back on, open the Windows Store and go to your account by clicking the small icon with your account picture in the upper toolbar, and then hit Settings. Under Purchase sign-in, turn off Streamline my purchase experience to require a password for every purchase, or turn it on so that it won’t require you a password anymore. If you choose to turn it on, you will need to enter your Microsoft password to verify.

Find Past Purchases

It is always a good practice to check your Windows Store account’s purchase history every so often, in order for you to identify whether your purchase(s) is still on the right track or not. To do this, open the Windows Store then head to your account, and then choose the Purchased option from the drop-down menu. This will direct you to the Microsoft’s Web Portal, wherein you’ll need to log in to your Microsoft account before you can see your transaction history.

The purchase history page will show you all of your past purchases (including free transactions), organized by year, made on your Microsoft account. This includes Windows Store purchases, Microsoft Store purchases, and Xbox store purchases.

Manage Your Devices

The app that you purchased from the Windows Store can be installed on up to 10 devices — computers, tablets, and phones. However, if you reach the allowed device limit, you will need to remove a device before you can install an app on the new device. If you need to do this, or to just see what devices have been authorized on your account, open the Windows Store, then go to your account. Click Settings, then under Account, click on Manage your devices. This will take you to Microsoft’s Web portal, where you will need to log in to your Microsoft account before you can view your authorized devices.

To remove an authorized device from your Microsoft account, find the device from your list, then click its corresponding Remove button. On the next screen, you will need to check a box to verify that you really want to remove the device.

Then to add a device, just sign in to the Windows Store on that device with your Microsoft account. That’s all you need to do.

Turn Off Automatic Updates

You can’t turn off automatic updates for Windows 10, but you can turn off automatic updates for games and apps purchased from the Windows Store. To do this, open the Windows Store, go to your account, and then clickSettings. Under App updates, turn Update apps automatically to off.
